Mission

The mission of the UCLA Cardiac Arrhythmia Center is to function at the cutting edge of modern technology; to excel in patient care, research and education in cardiac electrophysiology.  We ultimately aim to be a resource for the greater Los Angeles area, serving as a center of excellence for the management of cardiac arrhythmias.

Cardiac electrophysiology has expanded tremendously and interfaces with almost every area of cardiology.  The Ahmanson UCLA Cardiomyopathy Center (the largest CHF program in western US), Cardiac Surgery and Adult Congenital Heart Disease programs will be strengthened by the UCLA Cardiac Arrhythmia Center.

In addition to our emphasis on the highest quality of patient care, the Center is a major resource for training and research for house officers, cardiologists, and visiting cardiologists from the United States and abroad.  An advanced fellowship is offered for cardiologists with a career interest in cardiac electrophysiology.

Background

  • Atrial Fibrillation is the most common cardiac arrhythmia that is encountered in clinical practice.

  • Tachyarrhythmias are also very common.

  • Acute Myocardial Infarction: (per year)

    Myocardial infarction:                   1,500,000
    Pre hospital deaths:                        300,000 (>95% VT/VF)
    In hospital deaths:                           120,000 (20% VT/VF)
    Post hospital deaths:                        80,000 (10-50% VT/VF)

Facilities

  • Our Center has two state-of-the art EP labs for complex ablation work and an implant lab for devices.

  • We routinely utilize electroanatomic mapping systems and techniques such as intra-cardiac echocardiography for guiding procedures.

  • Invasive hemodynamic monitoring and support (using intra-aortic balloon pumps and cardiopulmonary bypass) is also utilized for complex ablation procedures.

  • In addition to this we offer intra-operative ablations in the cardiac OR’s where we are pioneering robotic and minimally invasive approaches to non-pharmacological management of arrhythmias.

  • Lead extractions are also performed by our center
